Why Ford Keeps Reinventing The F-150

Ray Varner Ford is Ford Truck Country. The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle in the country for more than 30 years.

Because Ford doesn't hesitate to make changes when they believe they can make the F-150 better. From time to time, that means completely re-inventing the truck--and how we think about trucks. It can be risky: People love Ford F-150s and are very loyal to the blue oval. So when Ford asks you to make a giant leap in technology, there has to be a very good reason. And Ford has to prove that it's right.

The 2015 F-150 is a giant leap forward. New engine technology. New body technology. And in many ways, a new way of looking at how a truck performs.

Lighter Is Smarter

Trucks have to be strong and tough. In the past, that has meant lots of steel—and lots of weight. But Ford engineers began looking closely at where the strength of steel was needed: the frame. The cab and bed don’t have the same demands as the frame, and testing proved that aluminum could be used without sacrificing performance.

Better yet, the aluminum meant that the truck would shed more than 700 pound--a phenomenal weight reduction. Ford also reworked the F-150 truck frame to make it more rigid, resulting in a win-win for the 2015 model.

The lighter truck means significantly better mileage, and new options for engines that can mean more efficiency without any loss of performance.

Smarter Power

Seven hundred pounds lighter means that a smaller engine could be used and still maintain the F-150's amazing power-to-weight ratio. A 5.0 liter V-8 now provides the same performance that previously needed a 6.2 liter engine. Ford’s amazing EcoBoost technology is now available in the F-150 in two options: a compact 2.7 liter EcoBoost V-6 and the stunning 3.5 liter twin turbo EcoBoost that provides so much torque you’d swear it was a big block V-8.

And that's just the start with the new F-150. New styling makes the truck absolutely gorgeous, and more amenities mean that you ride in amazing comfort and quiet, even if you’re working the vehicle to its maximum potential.

The all-new F-150 moves Ford even farther ahead. And pretty much ensures that the F-150 will continue to be America's most popular vehicle for a long time to come.
